Nigerian Leaders Condole with Rotimi Amaechi After Mother's Death
President Bola Tinubu and other Nigerian officials offered condolences to ADC vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi following the death of his mother, Mary Amaechi, at age 89.
Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, a community leader and mother of Rotimi Amaechi, died peacefully on July 16, 2026, at the age of 89. The family described her as a committed Christian leader and influential matriarch dedicated to promoting peace and unity. Rotimi Amaechi, a former Minister of Transportation and current vice-presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress, received wide support from political associates and government officials following the announcement.
President Bola Tinubu expressed sorrow over the loss, praising Dame Amaechi as a woman of deep faith and humility devoted to the Catholic Church. He extended condolences to the bereaved family and the government and people of Rivers State. Similarly, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara described the passing as an irreparable loss to the Ubima community and the state.
Other prominent figures offered sympathies, including Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and former National Inland Waterways Authority Managing Director George Moghalu. The African Democratic Congress also issued an official statement through National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, honoring the deceased's influence beyond her home. Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.
