Investors Warn of Concentration Risk in AI Trade

Investor Steve Eisman warns that the AI industry's heavy reliance on OpenAI and Anthropic creates a systemic vulnerability for major cloud providers.

Investor Steve Eisman warned that the AI trade faces significant concentration risk, describing the reliance of hyperscalers such as Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Oracle on OpenAI and Anthropic as an "Achilles’ heel." According to Eisman, these two labs account for approximately 70% of AI-related revenue and up to 35% of cloud revenue for those companies, meaning a failure at either lab or a price war triggered by Chinese open-weight models could destabilize the industry.

Hardware provider NVIDIA Corporation remains essential to the sector, but investor Michael Burry warned the company is vulnerable to a "circular financing web" and a potential pullback from its small group of hyperscale customers. In response to these risks, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang capped the company's exposure at roughly 25% per project in third-party financing deals, mobilizing over $500 billion in financing to insulate the firm.

Palantir Technologies Inc. is positioning itself as an alternative for enterprises seeking to avoid becoming "vassal states" of the major language labs. While Palantir bets on customers reducing their reliance on single AI labs, the company remains exposed to risks tied to U.S. government spending.
