China and Russia Coordinate Ceasefire Push as US Threatens Iran

China and Russia are coordinating at the UN to secure a ceasefire in the Middle East as President Donald Trump threatens more strikes on Iranian infrastructure.

Foreign Ministers Wang Yi of China and Sergei Lavrov of Russia coordinated via phone on April 5 and 6, 2026, to advocate for an immediate ceasefire and a return to diplomatic channels in West Asia. Their efforts precede a United Nations Security Council vote on a Bahraini resolution to protect commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has largely closed. Wang Yi identified a ceasefire as the fundamental solution to restoring the flow of global energy trade through the strait.

The diplomatic push follows a February 28 joint offensive by the United States and Israel that killed over 1,340 people, including Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran launched strikes against U.S. and Israeli assets and restricted maritime traffic. More recent strikes on April 4 targeted Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, while Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi specifically warned that attacks on the Bushehr nuclear power plant risk a regional radioactive disaster.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has set a Tuesday evening deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, threatening to destroy every remaining Iranian power plant and major facility if the deadline is not met. Mediation efforts by Pakistan, Türkiye, and Egypt have failed to produce a breakthrough, as Araghchi rejected a proposal for a temporary ceasefire in exchange for reopening the strait, insisting instead on a complete end to the regional war.
