Space Force Awards SpaceX $6.45 Billion for Satellite Systems

The United States Space Force awarded SpaceX two contracts totaling $6.45 billion to develop a missile-tracking constellation and a secure military communications network.

The United States Space Force awarded Space Exploration Technologies Corp. two major contracts totaling $6.45 billion to enhance national security space architecture. The primary agreement is a $4.16 billion contract for the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) project. This system will deploy a satellite constellation by 2028 to track airborne targets, including aircraft and missiles, providing persistent global coverage to eliminate operational blind spots.

This initiative integrates with the Golden Dome missile defense shield, a project proposed by President Donald Trump. While some reports estimate the broader missile defense project could cost $1.2 trillion over 20 years, the current cost of the Golden Dome initiative has risen to $185 billion to accelerate capabilities. The SB-AMTI project was developed in collaboration with the National Military Space Intelligence Agency.

Additionally, the Space Force awarded SpaceX a $2.29 billion contract for the Space Data Network (SDN) Backbone. This proliferated Low-Earth Orbit constellation is designed for high-throughput, low-latency data transport for the Joint Force, with a prototype expected by the end of 2027. These awards reflect a strategic shift toward integrating commercial networks and diversifying the industrial base to counter adversary anti-access/area-denial systems.
