Over 46 Million Americans Cast Early Midterm Ballots

More than 46 million Americans voted early in the 2026 midterms, driven by economic anxiety and competitive Senate races across several key states.

More than 46 million Americans cast early ballots ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, slightly exceeding the 2022 totals. Data from the University of Florida Election Lab indicates a party split among early voters, with registered Democrats making up 43.9%, Republicans 31.3%, and unaffiliated voters 24%.

Donald Trump is serving his second term as president while Republicans fight to maintain congressional majorities amid unpopularity regarding a war in Iran and an immigration crackdown. Forecasters from the Cook Political Report suggest Democrats are favored to regain the House majority and potentially the Senate. High engagement is particularly evident in states with competitive Senate races, such as Texas, which saw a 50% increase in early voting, and South Carolina, which experienced an 83% rise.

State-level surges include Maryland, where turnout increased by nearly 60%, and North Carolina, where nearly 2.4 million people voted early. In Ohio, nearly 1.5 million ballots were cast, surpassing 2018 and 2022 levels. Voter motivation is largely driven by economic concerns, including inflation, the cost of living, and state budget deficits. In contrast to the political surge, some regions report a decline in discretionary spending, evidenced by lower visitor numbers in Las Vegas.
