Maduro Shares Prison Photos as US Secures Oil Deal

Former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro released photographs of himself in a gray tracksuit from a New York prison on August 30, 2026. Sharing the images via his official X account, Maduro described them as a "small gift" for his grandchildren and supporters, asserting that he and his allies "stand firm" while awaiting trial. Although posted Sunday, camera data indicates the photos were taken on June 25.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured by U.S. forces during a military operation in Caracas in January. Currently detained in Brooklyn, they face federal charges including narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, and possession of war weapons. Both have pleaded not guilty, with their trial scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027.

Simultaneously, acting President Delcy Rodríguez announced a 25-year energy agreement granting the United States majority control over 17 strategic oilfields, including assets in the Orinoco Belt and Lake Maracaibo. The pact covers over 60 billion barrels of reserves and aims to increase production beyond 1.5 million barrels per day. President Donald Trump stated the Venezuelan oil would be used to refill the Strategic National Reserves, which he claimed were emptied under Joseph Biden. While Rodríguez described the deal as a sovereign mechanism expected to generate $209 billion for Venezuela, the agreement has faced backlash from both opposition groups and socialist hard-liners.
