North Korea May Send 50,000 More Troops to Russia
North Korea is expanding military support for Russia with ballistic missiles and a specialized missile unit, while potentially preparing to deploy up to 50,000 additional troops.
Intelligence agencies report that the Government of North Korea may send an additional 30,000 to 50,000 troops to support Russia in its war against Ukraine. This follows an initial deployment of 14,000 to 15,000 soldiers to the Kursk region in late 2024 to help repel a Ukrainian ground incursion.
Recent developments include the deployment of a specialized North Korean missile unit of approximately 90 personnel to the Voronezh region, potentially equipped with up to 120 ballistic missiles. Since 2025, North Korea has delivered 148 KN-23 and KN-24 ballistic missiles and millions of artillery shells to Russia. In exchange, Pyongyang receives oil, economic support, and military technology.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that this partnership poses a security threat to both Ukraine and the Asia-Pacific region, suggesting the missile influx indicates that Russia's strategic reserves are depleted. While the United States and NATO state these actions violate UN Security Council resolutions, Russia and North Korea justify the cooperation under a June 2024 strategic partnership treaty signed by Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un.
Military experts suggest North Korean forces will likely secure Russian border territories rather than fight on Ukrainian soil, which could free up 15,000 Russian troops for front-line combat. Analysts believe this involvement will not create a strategic turning point but could intensify pressure on Ukraine during the winter months.
