Greenland Warns Trump-Linked Oil Firm Over Unauthorized Drilling

The Government of Greenland issued a strong warning to Greenland Energy, a Texas-based oil company linked to Donald Trump, after the firm landed drilling equipment on the eastern coast without official authorization. The company plans to spend $60 million to drill wells in the Jameson Land region, claiming the area could hold $1 trillion in crude oil. Although Greenland Energy holds a majority stake in a project previously licensed to the UK firm 80 Mile, Greenland has ceased issuing new oil licenses since 2021.

Greenland Energy intends to drill an initial well in October, with additional equipment scheduled to arrive from Canada on September 12. The company maintains that recent meetings with regulators were constructive. The Government of Greenland stated that removing the current equipment would be disproportionate but mandated that all future logistical matters be approved by the mineral resources authority before execution.

These developments occur as President Donald Trump renews threats to claim the Arctic territory and appoints Jeff Landry as his Greenland envoy. Landry has asserted that the territory could be pumping oil as early as next year.
