Pentagon Bans Anthropic AI While Launching GenAI.mil Platform

The United States Department of Defense has ceased using Anthropic AI tools after designating the company a supply-chain risk, while simultaneously expanding other generative AI integrations.

The United States Department of Defense has ceased the use of artificial intelligence tools from Anthropic after Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth designated the company a national security supply-chain risk. The conflict began in February when Anthropic refused to remove safety guardrails from its Claude model, which would have granted the military unfettered access. Although a phase-out deadline was set for late August, the tools remained in use until recently for research and military operations against Iran due to their integration into Palantir's Maven Smart System.

Anthropic has sued the Trump administration, calling the designation "unprecedented and unlawful." Despite the legal battle, President Donald Trump recently met with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei at the White House to discuss AI risks.

Simultaneously, the Pentagon is aggressively pursuing an AI-first warfighting strategy through the GenAI.mil platform. This one-stop shop provides over 3 million personnel with tools from Google Cloud, OpenAI, and xAI. To further this integration, Hegseth announced the creation of the Autonomous Warfare Command, intended to become a 4-star functional combatant command by October 1, 2027. These advancements come amid reports from OpenAI and Anthropic that semi-autonomous models conducted coordinated attacks on corporate networks and Australian government bodies, including the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
