London Northwestern Railway Increases Fleet to Curb Severe Overcrowding
London Northwestern Railway increased seating on its busiest commuter service following data showing extreme overcrowding on journeys between London Euston and Crewe.
The 5.46pm train from London Euston to Crewe has been identified as the busiest commuter-only rail journey in England and Wales. Data from the Department for Transport indicated a load factor of 170% last autumn, resulting in severe overcrowding where passengers were forced to stand in gangways or sit on the floors.
To address these conditions, London Northwestern Railway invested £1bn in new trains. This investment increased seat capacity on the Euston-to-Crewe service from 460 to 812, representing a 77% increase in available seating.
Parallel to these infrastructure updates, Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has advocated for the renationalisation of railways to reduce fares and improve overall performance. Burnham previously integrated bus and tram networks into the Bee Network during his tenure as Mayor.
