President Donald Trump agreed to grant an immediate travel visa to Doris Adu Gyamfi, the mother of a 15-year-old Ghanaian immigrant shot and killed in the Bronx. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the decision Saturday after a phone call with the president to secure the visa for Gyamfi.
Javits Frimpong was shot in the abdomen Thursday morning while walking to school near Crotona Park and later died at St. Barnabas Hospital. The New York City Police Department is investigating the killing, though no suspects have been identified. The victim's father, Thomas Frimpong, reported that his son had been bullied at school shortly before the attack.
Ghanaian Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that the administration of President John Mahama will cover the travel costs for the mother. While the Ghana Diaspora Public Affairs Collective noted other recent violent crimes against Ghanaians in the Bronx, the group stated there is no evidence these incidents are connected.
