Idaho Legislators Target AI Data Centers Amid Energy Crisis

The state of Idaho is experiencing an energy crisis driven by the rapid expansion of large industrial projects, including a Meta data center currently under construction in Kuna. This surge in power demand has strained the electrical grid and increased energy costs for residents and businesses. To offset these costs, Idaho Power raised its annual revenue by 7.48%, or $110 million, last December.

In response to the grid stress, the Idaho Legislature is considering new legislation that would mandate AI data centers to provide their own independent power sources. Congressman Russ Fulcher has cautioned that the state's inadequate infrastructure is causing Idaho to lose opportunities to attract other new industries.

To alleviate the crisis and lower prices, officials are looking to the Idaho Nuclear Laboratory to develop mini reactors. President Donald Trump is reportedly accelerating the process of deploying these nuclear reactors to help stabilize and reduce energy costs across the region.
