Conservatives Press Mark Carney to Repeal B.C. Tanker Ban

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and Opposition MPs are urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to scrap the oil tanker moratorium on British Columbia's northern coast.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and several Opposition MPs are calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to repeal the Oil Tanker Moratorium Act. The act currently prohibits tankers from carrying more than 12,500 metric tonnes of crude oil along the northern coast of British Columbia. This push coincides with the second reading of Bill C-264, a private member's bill sponsored by MP David McKenzie that would scrap the ban entirely.

Opposition members argue the moratorium forces Canada to sell oil at a discount to American refineries, which they claim effectively donates billions of dollars to the United States. They specifically cite a proposal by Strathcona Resources to ship 250,000 barrels of oil daily through Prince Rupert. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also supports the repeal, stating it is necessary for Canada to become a global energy superpower and secure better resource prices.

The request contradicts a July agreement signed between Prime Minister Carney and former British Columbia Premier David Eby to maintain the ban without alteration. However, the political landscape in British Columbia shifted following a recent provincial election where Lorne Doerkson's Conservatives won approximately two-thirds of the seats, defeating the New Democrats. Despite this shift, the Liberal government is considered unlikely to act on the repeal request.
