Iran Reports Mass Casualties Following US and Israeli Strikes
Iran reports hundreds of student and teacher deaths and extensive damage to schools and hospitals following a conflict with the United States and Israel.
The Government of Iran reports severe infrastructure damage and significant casualties following a conflict with the United States and Israel that began on February 28, 2026. The hostilities were triggered by U.S. and Israeli strikes that assassinated Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and several military commanders. Iranian officials state the attacks killed 279 students and 67 teachers, destroyed 1,000 schools, and damaged nearly 240 health centers, including 50 hospitals.
Iran retaliated through Operation True Promise 4, executing 100 waves of missile and drone strikes. The Iranian Air Force conducted sorties targeting bases in Kuwait, Qatar, and Erbil, Iraq, while air defenses reportedly downed over 170 enemy aircraft. Joint security operations between the Army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps were also conducted in the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire brokered by the Government of Pakistan took effect on April 8. Although President Donald Trump unilaterally extended the truce before April 22, Iran continues to maintain a war footing. Iranian military officials accuse the United States of violating the ceasefire by implementing an illegal naval blockade of Iranian ports.
