Gina Hinojosa Pledges Bipartisan Texas Administration After Upset Victory
Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa announced plans for a bipartisan administration after becoming the first Latina governor of Texas in a midterm upset.
Gina Hinojosa announced Thursday her intention to build a bipartisan administration following her victory in the midterm elections. A former state legislator from Austin, Hinojosa is the first Democrat to win the Texas governorship since 1990 and the first Latina to hold the office. She defeated incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott, who was denied a fourth term.
Hinojosa campaigned on the cost of living, public education, and opposition to data centers. To signal her bipartisan approach, she appointed a former rural Republican lawmaker to her transition team who opposed private school vouchers, a policy she intends to repeal. Hinojosa stated she intends to be a governor for all Texans rather than just Democrats.
While Democrats flipped the state House, Republicans maintain control of the Texas Senate, leaving Hinojosa to face a divided legislature. Democratic state Representative Christina Morales emphasized that the party's focus will remain on schools and the economy, noting that voters did not prioritize culture issues in the election.
