Senator Chris Murphy Urges End to War With Iran

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy has called for an immediate end to the five-month war with Iran, asserting that the conflict has depleted U.S. military readiness. Speaking on NBC News, Murphy warned that the United States has exhausted almost all of its interceptors and the majority of its Tomahawk missiles, leaving the country and its allies vulnerable to Russia and China. He indicated he would oppose a $67 billion Pentagon request for defense funding unless the conflict ends and the Strait of Hormuz reopens.

Chris Murphy expressed willingness to support a "bad deal" to restore the waterway, even if it requires paying Iran $100 billion annually to rebuild its military and proxies. He argued that the war has caused severe domestic economic strain and driven up consumer prices. While he refuses to fund the continuation of hostilities, he stated he would support funding to replenish munitions once the war concludes.

Republican Senator Jim Banks defended the campaign, claiming U.S. forces destroyed 85% of Iran's ballistic missiles and defense industrial base. President Donald Trump acknowledged that while some munition supplies are "virtually unlimited," others are "a little bit tighter." To address economic concerns, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett reported that the administration has increased domestic oil production and waived the Jones Act to stabilize energy prices while the U.S. Navy escorts ships out of the Gulf.
