Lula Launches Fourth Term Bid Emphasizing Brazilian Sovereignty

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva formally launched his campaign for a fourth and final term during a Workers' Party national convention in Sao Paulo on Sunday. The campaign follows escalating tensions with the United States under the Donald Trump administration, which imposed two rounds of tariffs on Brazilian exports in July and redesignated two local criminal groups as terrorist organizations. Lula is running on a ticket with Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, backed by a seven-party coalition, and is emphasizing a platform of income tax reform and a popular debt forgiveness program.

Lula's primary opponent is Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Flávio Bolsonaro has garnered support from right-wing international leaders, including Donald Trump, Argentine President Javier Milei, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Recent Datafolha polling shows Lula leading 48% to 43% for a second-round runoff. The race is currently characterized by mutual accusations of corruption involving the candidates' family members and concerns over foreign interference via social media manipulation.
