Stripe CEO Patrick Collison Urges Students Against Rushing College Dropout
Patrick Collison advised Gen Z students against dropping out of college to start businesses, citing his own past urgency as a poor intuition.
Patrick Collison, CEO and cofounder of Stripe, advised Gen Z students at Y Combinator’s Startup School to avoid feeling pressured to drop out of college for the sake of starting a company. Collison described his own decision to leave MIT as a "poor intuition" driven by a sense of urgency that he now considers unnecessary. He emphasized that opportunities in Silicon Valley remain abundant over decades and that leaving education is not an irreversible decision.
This perspective aligns with Jeff Bezos, who argued that traditional educational paths and experience improve an entrepreneur's odds of success, noting that famous dropouts are the exception. Despite this caution regarding education, Collison and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang both asserted that the current era is an ideal time to launch a business. They highlighted how artificial intelligence has lowered barriers to entry and reduced costs for new founders.
Stripe data supports this trend, showing a surge in new businesses launching on its platform. The company reported that a higher number of startups are reaching significant revenue milestones now than in previous years, reflecting the impact of AI on entrepreneurship.
