UK State Pension to Rise 3.9% in April 2027

The UK state pension will increase to £13,036 annually in April 2027, driven by wage growth under the triple lock policy.

The UK state pension is projected to increase by 3.9% in April 2027, raising the full flat-rate annual payment from £12,547.60 to £13,036.40, or £250.70 per week. This adjustment is driven by the triple lock policy, which ties annual rises to the highest of average wage growth, consumer price inflation, or 2.5%. Because average earnings growth reached 3.9% while September inflation stood at 3.5%, the wage figure determined the increase.

Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, committed to maintaining the triple lock for the remainder of the current Parliament. However, he announced plans to reform the mechanism into a double lock by April 2030 to help fund a new National Care Service in England. Under the proposed reform, pensions would still be guaranteed to rise by at least 2.5% or the Consumer Prices Index inflation rate.

For the first time, the annual payout will exceed the frozen personal income tax threshold of £12,570 by approximately £466. The Government of the United Kingdom stated that pensioners whose sole income is the state pension will not pay income tax, though those with additional income sources may face higher tax liabilities. Former chancellor Rachel Reeves previously made similar assurances, though specific implementation details remain unconfirmed.
