Democrats Target Four State Legislatures to End Electoral College

Democrats seek majorities in key state legislatures to trigger the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact and replace the Electoral College with a national popular vote.

The U.S. presidential election process could shift to a national popular vote if Democrats secure majorities in at least four of five key state legislatures during the November elections. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) currently comprises 18 states and Washington, D.C., totaling 222 electoral votes. To activate the compact, it must reach 270 electoral votes, leaving a current deficit of 48.

Battleground states Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin hold a combined 61 electoral votes. Securing four of these states would push the NPVIC over the required threshold. The Democratic Socialists of America have already included the replacement of the Electoral College in their official platform.

Opponents of the move argue it would undermine the current system. Trent England of Save Our States claims the compact is a backdoor attempt to rewrite election rules, while former elector Jasper Hendricks warns that the shift would lead to endless lawsuits and recriminations. Donald Trump has also cautioned that Democrats may alter electoral vote distributions if they control the White House and Congress.
