Trump Issues Pipeline Permits to Increase US-Canada Oil Flow

Donald Trump issued four permits for crude oil and petroleum pipeline facilities in North Dakota and Michigan to expand energy infrastructure and lower costs.

President Donald Trump issued four presidential permits on April 15, 2026, to expand the flow of crude oil and petroleum products between the United States and Canada. The authorizations include a permit for Bakken Pipeline Company LP to construct new facilities in Burke County, North Dakota, and separate permits for subsidiaries of Enbridge Inc. to operate existing facilities in Michigan and North Dakota.

Specifically, Enbridge Energy, Limited Partnership received authorization to maintain three border facilities in Pembina County, North Dakota, utilizing pipelines with diameters of 18, 26, and 34 inches. These permits cover the transport of naphtha, jet fuel, gasoline, and diesel, though they explicitly exclude natural gas. The Enbridge authorization supersedes a permit originally issued in December 1991 and requires compliance with safety regulations administered by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

This move aligns with a broader administration strategy to lower energy costs through infrastructure investment. The action follows previous tensions regarding the Keystone XL pipeline, which the Joe Biden administration revoked in 2021.
