Zelenskyy Fires General Syrskyi Following Nationwide Protests

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fired General Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces on July 21, 2026, appointing Mykhailo Drapatyi as his replacement. The decision followed several days of mass protests in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Odesa, and Dnipro, where demonstrators demanded Syrskyi's removal and the reinstatement of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

General Syrskyi defended his record in an op-ed, denying that he opposed drone warfare and arguing that military transformation takes time. However, the public pressure intensified, with protesters labeling Syrskyi "the Butcher." Zelenskyy initially described the conflict between the General Staff and the defense ministry as "systemic" and appointed Yevheniy Khmara as the interim defense minister.

To resolve the instability, Zelenskyy met with Fedorov and offered him a government position to unify the technology sector, though it is not yet confirmed if Fedorov accepted. This marks the second time Zelenskyy has reversed a policy due to street pressure. The internal turmoil occurred alongside continued Ukrainian drone strikes in Russia's Moscow region and a Russian attack on a Ukraine-bound gas tanker near Romania.
