Prime Minister Takaichi Raises Residency Fees by 2,000 Percent

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi implemented restrictive immigration measures including a massive increase in permanent residency fees to address citizen anxiety over foreign nationals.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi implemented a series of restrictive immigration policies under the Comprehensive Measures for Acceptance and Coexistence of Foreign Nationals. The most significant change is a 2,000 percent increase in permanent residency application fees, which rose from $64 to $1,271.

The new regulations introduce stringent requirements for applicants, including a minimum annual income of $36,428 and pension contributions consistent with 30 years of service. Applicants must also demonstrate Japanese language proficiency. Additionally, the government increased some tourist visa fees by 400 percent and raised capital requirements for business manager visas.

Takaichi stated these measures are necessary because "there are citizens who feel anxiety and a sense of unfairness" regarding the influx of foreigners. Critics, including members of the Communist Party and liberal media, argue the policies stoke xenophobia and hinder Japan's ability to address severe labor shortages caused by a declining population.
