Robert Malley Criticizes U.S. Strategy Toward Iran

Former U.S. diplomat Robert Malley argues that the United States lacks a coherent strategy in its conflict with Iran, citing shifting objectives that have fluctuated between regime change and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. He contends that the current approach of military strikes and economic pressure has been counterproductive and may embolden Iranian leadership to pursue nuclear weapons for deterrence.

Malley asserts that diplomacy is the only effective path forward, specifically suggesting that the U.S. offer security guarantees and economic relief in exchange for nuclear compromises. He notes that during 2025 negotiations, Iran demonstrated a willingness to allow International Atomic Energy Agency inspections and suspend uranium enrichment.

To achieve a resolution, Malley emphasizes that Gulf states must be central to future negotiations because of their economic leverage and the direct impact of the conflict on regional infrastructure and global commodity prices. He maintains that the Iranian leadership will not surrender simply because of economic triangulation or military strikes.
