Democrats Introduce Bill to Block Trump Public Charge Rule

Democratic lawmakers introduced the Protect American Values Act to block federal funding for a new public charge rule issued by the Donald Trump administration. Scheduled for implementation on September 18, the rule rescinds a 2022 Biden-era policy that excluded non-cash benefits, such as Medicaid and SNAP, from public charge determinations.

Representative Judy Chu and Senator Mazie Hirono, who introduced the bill, argue the policy grants immigration officers broad discretion to deny green cards based on subjective judgment. They claim the rule will deter mixed-status families from accessing essential health and housing services. The legislation has received cosponsorship from over 50 House members and endorsements from more than 100 organizations.

The White House defended its broader immigration crackdown, citing the deportation of over three million undocumented immigrants and the termination of benefits for 1.4 million individuals. In addition to the public charge rule, the administration introduced new executive orders aimed at restricting birthright citizenship and curbing birth tourism.
