China and Thailand Establish 2+2 Security Dialogue Mechanism

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul conducted an official visit to China from July 16 to 20, 2026, resulting in the establishment of a 2+2 dialogue mechanism between the respective foreign and defense ministers. During meetings in Shanghai and Beijing, Anutin and Chinese leaders agreed to expedite the first phase of the China-Thailand high-speed railway for completion by 2030 and expand cooperation in artificial intelligence, aerospace, and clean energy.

In Shanghai on July 17, President Xi Jinping met with both Anutin and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. Xi urged Thailand and Cambodia to resolve their border disputes through peaceful dialogue and consultation. With Hun Manet, Xi focused on the Diamond Hexagon cooperation framework and the development of industrial and agricultural corridors. Both Thailand and Cambodia committed to intensifying efforts with China to combat cross-border telecom fraud and online gambling.

Concluding the visit in Beijing, Anutin met with Premier Li Qiang and Chairman Zhao Leji. The two nations signed 15 agreements covering nuclear fusion, deep-space exploration, and public health. Anutin reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to the one-China policy, stating that the country will never support any act of Taiwan independence. The visit culminated in a joint statement to build a China-Thailand community with a shared future.
