Ramaphosa Receives Report on Unauthorized Iranian Naval Drills
President Cyril Ramaphosa received an investigation report detailing why Iranian warships participated in Cape Town naval drills despite his explicit orders to exclude them.
President Cyril Ramaphosa received a finalized investigation report on October 27 detailing the circumstances surrounding the participation of Iranian warships in naval drills off Cape Town in January. The report, compiled by a retired judge, examines whether officials within the South African Defense Ministry or high-ranking members of the armed forces ignored the president's explicit instructions to exclude Iran from the exercises.
The drills were organized under the BRICS bloc and included vessels from Russia and China. The event took place during a period of severe internal unrest in Iran and heightened tensions with the United States. The U.S. government criticized the exercises, with President Donald Trump citing South Africa's relations with Iran as evidence of an anti-American foreign policy.
President Ramaphosa has kept the findings confidential while he reviews the report to determine who was responsible for the "failure to heed the instruction".
