Asiya El-Rufai Urges President Tinubu to Ensure Fair Trial
Asiya El-Rufai appealed to President Bola Tinubu to guarantee the constitutional rights and medical care of her detained husband, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
The wives of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, led by Asiya El-Rufai, have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure the fair treatment of the former governor during his criminal prosecution. Speaking from her Abuja residence and on ARISE NEWS, Asiya alleged that her husband is being subjected to psychological warfare and has been denied access to his lawyers, family, and adequate medical care for high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and glaucoma.
These appeals follow the arrest of Nasir El-Rufai's personal physician, Professor Bello Abubakar, by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The ICPC alleges that Abubakar made false statements and that El-Rufai abused a court-approved medical visit at the National Hospital Abuja to conduct political meetings. The African Democratic Congress further claimed that El-Rufai was returned to custody despite medical recommendations for admission and that Asiya was assaulted during a subsequent confrontation.
Asiya reminded President Tinubu of the family's support during his 2023 campaign, stating they are not seeking to halt the judicial process but are requesting basic constitutional rights, including affordable bail. The situation drew a response from Peter Obi, a presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, who warned that selective justice could erode public trust and threaten national unity. He urged law enforcement to adhere strictly to due process.
