Meta Mandates Engineer Transfers to New Applied AI Unit

Meta is reorganizing its technical workforce by drafting top software engineers into the newly created Applied AI (AAI) Engineering unit. According to an internal memo from Maher Saba, head of the organization, these transfers are no longer voluntary as the company seeks to scale the team. The AAI unit is tasked with developing AI agents that can autonomously write code and execute complex tasks to build, test, and ship products, with human staff serving as monitors.

This shift comes as Meta prepares for sweeping layoffs that could eliminate tens of thousands of jobs. The company intends to use these cuts to offset the high costs of artificial intelligence infrastructure and increase efficiency through AI-assisted labor.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that 2026 is expected to be the year AI dramatically changes the company's work processes. He indicated that the company will use AI-native tooling to elevate individual contributors and flatten team structures to increase overall productivity.
