Rochester Public Utilities Reports No Cyberattack on Water Systems

Rochester Public Utilities announced on July 31, 2026, that it found no evidence of a cyberattack on its water systems. The announcement comes as more than 30 community water systems across Minnesota have been targeted by dozens of cybersecurity incidents.

Information technology and operational teams at the utility are currently monitoring systems and reviewing data provided by industry, state, and federal partners. Minnesota IT Services has activated coordinated cyber response capabilities to address the statewide activity. While some federal officials suspect Iranian involvement, state officials have not attributed the activity to a specific actor.

General Manager Tim McCollough stated that the utility is maintaining established cybersecurity safeguards and incident response procedures. Minnesota IT Services reports that no residents have been asked to modify their drinking water use as a result of the malicious activity.
