Nigerian Military Retirees Protest Over Unpaid Pension Adjustments

Retired military personnel protested in Abuja, demanding the government implement pension adjustments following salary increases for active military and paramilitary personnel.

Retired military personnel gathered near the Ministry of Defence of Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, to demand the implementation of consequential pension adjustments. Led by Innocent Azubike, the veterans alleged that a salary increase approved by President Bola Tinubu in November 2025 was never reflected in retiree pensions. They further claimed that a second salary increase announced in August 2026, scheduled for September implementation, also excludes pensioners from fund computations.

Protesters argued that these exclusions violate the Armed Forces Act and their constitutional rights, creating disparities where newly retired junior personnel may earn more than senior officers who retired years earlier. Security forces, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army, used armored personnel carriers to block access to the ministry, leading to tense confrontations between serving and retired personnel. Veterans warned they would escalate protests to the Asokoro gate to attract the attention of the Presidency if their demands were not met.

Following the disruption, Minister of Defence Christopher Musa, represented by Permanent Secretary Richard Pheelangwah, met with veteran representatives. Musa stated that wage and pension adjustments are receiving urgent attention from financial authorities. He urged retirees to remain calm, noting that any adjustments must be properly computed and funded to ensure sustainability and avoid unintended disparities.
