Narendra Modi Reports India Solar Capacity Exceeds 160 GW

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India's solar energy capacity increased from approximately 2 GW twelve years ago to over 160 GW as of September 2026. Speaking at the International Conference on The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics in Delhi, Modi detailed the government's clean energy expansion and its impact on carbon emissions.

Modi highlighted the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which provided rooftop solar installations to more than 50 lakh households, commissioning 14.8 GW of capacity by August 2026. He also noted the PM-KUSUM scheme's installation of solar pumps for 30 lakh farmers and the completion of the One Nation, One Grid project.

Beyond solar, the Prime Minister reported a 950-fold increase in electric vehicles over the last 12 years and the launch of India's first hydrogen train. He stated that solar energy alone prevented approximately 20 crore tonnes of carbon emissions, while noting further advancements in wind, hydro, and nuclear energy.
