Senator Whitehouse Alleges Kennedy Center Rushed Renovations for Trump
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse released whistleblower allegations claiming the Kennedy Center bypassed contracting laws to satisfy President Donald Trump's aesthetic preferences for televised events.
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island has revealed whistleblower allegations detailing rushed and shoddy renovations at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Based on a disclosure from the Government Accountability Project, Whitehouse alleges the center bypassed federal contracting laws and ignored congressional authorizations to satisfy the aesthetic preferences of President Donald Trump.
The renovations were allegedly accelerated to prepare the venue for televised events in December, including the FIFA World Cup draw where Trump received the FIFA Peace Prize. Specific claims include the use of no-bid contracts, such as an $8 million flooring contract awarded to an inexperienced firm, and the removal of new bathroom tiles because the president disliked the color. Additionally, reports indicate that steel columns repainted white to match the building's marble are already rusting and a reflecting pool may require complete reconstruction.
These allegations follow a period of turmoil in which Donald Trump seized control of the venue, installed himself as board chair, and attempted to rename the center after himself before court orders reversed those actions. Whitehouse sent a letter with an 83-page appendix of documents and photos to Executive Director Matt Floca, demanding answers by July 23. While the Kennedy Center defended its financial oversight, the White House accused previous leadership of neglecting the facility and asserted that the president provided the necessary resources to fix the center.
