Kemi Badenoch Demands Emergency Laws to Block Prisoner Release

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has demanded that Prime Minister Andy Burnham recall Parliament from its summer recess to introduce emergency legislation. The move aims to block a Labour government scheme designed to ease prison overcrowding by allowing some of 6,000 offenders to be released after serving one-third of their sentence instead of one-half.

The proposal sparked intense criticism after the family of slain police officer Andrew Harper noted that two of his killers were eligible for release. In response, Andy Burnham paused the scheme last week to conduct an urgent review. Badenoch argued that a review is insufficient to protect the public and that legislative changes are necessary to ensure violent offenders, including rapists and paedophiles, remain incarcerated.

Opponents of Badenoch's demand, including Reform UK Shadow Home Secretary Zia Yusuf, pointed out that the Conservative Party originally introduced early release policies in 2023 to combat the same capacity crisis. Reports indicate that under Conservative leadership, approximately 10,000 prisoners were released early and 23 prisons were closed, which critics argue contributed to the current overcrowding issues.
