Jamie Raskin Warns Oil Companies Against Russian Diesel Deal
Representative Jamie Raskin warned American oil companies that importing Russian diesel under a new agreement negotiated by President Donald Trump violates federal law.
Representative Jamie Raskin warned American oil companies that importing Russian diesel under a new agreement between the United States and Moscow would be a "clear and dangerous violation of federal law." In a letter sent to the American Petroleum Institute and the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers, Raskin stated that participating companies could face civil and criminal penalties, including up to 20 years of imprisonment.
The warning follows an announcement by President Donald Trump that Russia will immediately supply 300,000 tons of diesel to American and global markets, with 500,000 tons planned for November and 1,000,000 tons thereafter. The White House maintains the deal complies with all laws and dismissed Raskin's warnings as a political obsession with the president.
This legal dispute occurs amid rising energy prices and upcoming midterm elections. Democrats are currently projected to win control of the House, a shift that could make Raskin the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
