UK Government Expands Benefit Support and Scraps Two-Child Limit
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expanded financial support for benefit claimants by extending energy discounts and removing the two-child limit on Universal Credit.
The UK government has implemented two significant measures to increase financial support for benefit claimants. The Warm Home Discount scheme now includes all Universal Credit households, offering a one-time £150 payment in energy credits or vouchers between November and January to mitigate rising energy costs.
Additionally, the Department for Work and Pensions confirmed that 436,780 households, including roughly 1.5 million children, will receive increased Universal Credit payments. This follows the official removal of the two-child benefit limit on April 6, a policy change announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in her November budget.
Keir Starmer stated that these decisions aim to lift half a million children out of poverty and move the country toward a fairer Britain. In response, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticized the measures, arguing that the policy shifts favor benefit claimants over working people.
