Jon Stewart Urges Democrats to Prioritize Economy Over Impeachment
Jon Stewart and other Democratic-aligned figures urged the party to focus on economic recovery rather than impeachment hearings for Donald Trump.
Comedian Jon Stewart urged Democrats to prioritize economic recovery over impeachment hearings for Donald Trump if the party wins a House majority. Speaking on his podcast, The Weekly Show, Stewart characterized potential hearings as a "five-act performative play" and argued that previous impeachments and the January 6 inquiry demonstrated that such proceedings fail to produce accountability.
Stewart called for a full government effort to rebalance the economy, specifically focusing on the relationship between labor and capital. Other Democratic-aligned figures, including James Carville, Al Hunt, and Rahm Emanuel, echoed these cautions. Emanuel stated that a conviction is unlikely and that Democrats are never going to get an impeachment.
President Donald Trump dismissed the possibility of impeachment during a Wednesday appearance in the Oval Office, claiming he can do whatever he wants if he wants. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has not yet stated whether he would support such proceedings.
