Trump Promises Cash Payments Amid Divergent Economic Outcomes
President Donald Trump promised $5,000 to every adult citizen if Republicans keep Congress to counter reports of rising costs for lower-income households.
President Donald Trump has promised to pay $5,000 to every adult citizen if Republicans retain control of Congress in the November 3 elections. The move follows data indicating that his economic strategy of tariffs, tax cuts, and deportations has created divergent outcomes across income groups.
While the White House claims these policies are fueling a "blue-collar BOOM" and driving a 3% annualized growth rate, reports suggest the wealthiest Americans have gained while lower- and middle-income households have seen losses. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported that sweeping tariffs increased consumer goods costs by roughly 2%, and the Yale Budget Lab estimated these tariffs will cost the average household $1,100 this year.
Living expenses have further increased due to rising mortgage rates and the expiration of Obamacare subsidies. Additionally, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act provided tax gains primarily to the wealthy while reducing access to Medicaid and food stamps. Although manufacturing output has risen, the sector has lost 20,000 jobs since January 2025, including nearly 9,000 factory jobs in North Carolina over the past year. Inflationary pressures have also been linked to oil price increases resulting from a war in Iran.
