Democrats Seize Control of Congress in Midterm Landslide

Democrats won majorities in both the U.S. House and Senate, delivering a significant electoral defeat to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

Democrats won control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate in the November 2026 midterm elections, marking the largest wave election since Watergate. The party secured at least 54 Senate seats and a strong House majority, flipping key Republican strongholds in Texas, Kansas, and South Carolina. Historic victories included the election of Abdul El-Sayed as the first Muslim U.S. Senator from Michigan and Keisha Lance Bottoms as the first Black woman governor in U.S. history in Georgia.

Donald Trump accepted the results but attributed the losses to high fuel prices and his absence from the ballot. He vowed to use his veto power to block legislation he dislikes, warning that a third impeachment attempt would destroy the Democratic Party. Internal Republican friction emerged as Vice President JD Vance explicitly blamed the war with Iran for the defeat, while Governor Ron DeSantis described the results as an extinction-level event for the party.

The victory overcame extensive Republican redistricting efforts in states like Florida and Texas, which largely failed to secure the intended seats. While Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer celebrated the win, the party faces internal ideological divides between centrist members and progressives. Additionally, some state-level ballot measures showed a conservative lean, with voters in Washington and Arizona approving restrictions on transgender athletes in girls' sports.

With control of Congress, Democrats now hold the power to block further Supreme Court appointments and launch investigations into the Trump administration. However, they lack the two-thirds supermajority required to override presidential vetoes, setting the stage for potential legislative gridlock.
