Keralam Assembly Passes Resolution to Remove Chief Election Commissioner
The Keralam Legislative Assembly passed a historic resolution demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged voter roll irregularities.
The Keralam Legislative Assembly passed a resolution on October 12, 2026, calling for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Moved by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and supported by the United Democratic Front and the Left Democratic Front, the resolution marks the first time a state assembly in India has sought the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner.
The resolution alleges that the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls disenfranchised hundreds of thousands of eligible voters, specifically targeting minorities, young voters, and migrant workers through software errors and technical manipulation. In addition to Kumar's removal, the assembly demanded the restoration of voting rights for those excluded and the inclusion of the Chief Justice of India in the selection committee for election commissioners.
The Bharatiya Janata Party opposed the measure and proposed amendments that the assembly rejected. This legislative action coincides with national protests led by Rahul Gandhi and a preliminary investigation ordered by the state government into corruption allegations against Kumar stemming from his previous role as Public Works Department secretary.
