Trump Promises $5,000 Dividend if Republicans Win Midterms

During a first-of-its-kind Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Donald Trump promised a $5,000 "Trump Dividend" to every adult American citizen if Republicans maintain control of the House and Senate in the November 3 elections. Trump characterized the payment as a reward for citizens who endured the previous administration's policies, stipulating that the funds must be spent within the United States.

Economists and budget analysts estimate the program would cost between $1.2 trillion and $1.6 trillion, potentially exacerbating a national debt that has surpassed $40 trillion. While Trump suggested the payments could be funded by tariff revenues and claimed the U.S. can easily afford the cost, the Tax Foundation noted that current customs duties would cover only a fraction of the total. Vice President JD Vance later suggested the dividend might exclude wealthy citizens and target the middle class.

Democratic leaders, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Representative Jamie Raskin, condemned the pledge as a political bribe and "taxpayer-funded blood money." Some Republican fiscal hawks also expressed skepticism, with Representative Chip Roy questioning the financing and former Representative Bob Good labeling it a "socialist vote-buying scheme."

House Speaker Mike Johnson described the proposal as a "creative idea" and stated that Congress would work to find consensus, though he noted that legislative approval is required. Trump has contradicted this, claiming in interviews that congressional authorization might not be necessary. The announcement comes amid record-low approval ratings for Trump and public dissatisfaction over the economy and an ongoing war with Iran.
