India Repatriates 274 Fugitives From 36 Countries

The Ministry of Home Affairs announced on August 4, 2026, that India repatriated 274 fugitive criminals from 36 countries between 2019 and July 2026. These individuals were wanted for crimes including terrorism, murder, sexual offenses, and financial fraud. The government reported a significant increase in efficiency over the 2004-2013 period, stating that the extradition of fugitives has become a national priority.

To facilitate these returns, the government implemented a technology-driven strategy. This included the 2018 Fugitive Economic Offenders Act and the 2025 launch of BHARATPOL. Additionally, the government executed Operation Trishul, which employs satellite and digital footprint analysis to locate absconders. Under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, authorities attached assets totaling Rs 17,874 crore.

Coordination efforts involved the Central Bureau of Investigation and Interpol, with the former establishing a Special Global Operations Centre for real-time communication. Reports on Interpol's involvement vary, with one source stating 401 Red Corner Notices were issued over the last three years, while another claims the number was 501.
