South Korea Expands Naval Mission Near Strait of Hormuz

South Korea is expanding the Cheonghae anti-piracy unit's operational area to waters south of Oman following requests for military support from the United States.

The government of South Korea is seeking parliamentary approval to expand the operational radius of the Cheonghae anti-piracy unit to waters south of Oman, near the port of Duqm. This move roughly doubles the unit's reach to 1,930 kilometers, positioning naval assets closer to the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

To support the expansion, the government will deploy a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team, and unmanned mine-sweeping systems. Personnel will increase by 75, bringing the total force to 395. While officials state the expansion aims to protect citizens and economic interests amid a tripling of piracy in the Gulf of Aden, the decision follows pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump for South Korea to support the U.S.-Iran war.

South Korean officials emphasize that the reinforcement is for non-combat purposes and will operate under an independent chain of command. The unit is prohibited from monitoring Iranian territory. The EOD team is specifically intended for potential post-war international efforts to clear sea mines from the Strait of Hormuz once a permissive environment is established.
