Trump Media Sells High-Speed API Access to Presidential Posts
Trump Media & Technology Group is selling high-speed access to presidential posts via a new API, sparking a lawsuit over the privatization of government information.
Trump Media & Technology Group has launched the Truth API, a data feed providing automated, high-speed access to posts from top accounts, including President Donald Trump. The company is selling monthly contracts for the service ranging from $60,000 to $100,000, targeting high-frequency trading firms, AI companies, and news organizations. CEO Kevin McGurn stated that more than 10 customers have already signed up, describing the API as a high-margin, recurring revenue stream intended to create value for shareholders following a second quarter where losses increased 10-fold to $238 million.
The monetization plan has triggered immediate legal and legislative backlash. The Intercept and the Freedom of the Press Foundation filed a lawsuit in the Southern District of New York against President Trump and several associates, including White House Deputy Chief of Staff Daniel Scavino. The plaintiffs argue the API violates the First and Fifth Amendments by privatizing official government information for personal profit and denying the public equal access to presidential statements.
Simultaneously, Senator Mark Warner introduced a bill to ban social media companies from selling special access to the accounts of government employees. Trump Media has dismissed these criticisms as misguided, asserting that the API only provides access to public information and that critics fail to grasp the distinction between public and nonpublic data.
