Jensen Huang and Tech Leaders Oppose Open AI Model Ban

Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, led a coalition of 25 companies, including Microsoft and Palantir, in sending a policy letter to the U.S. government opposing restrictions on open-weight artificial intelligence models. The appeal comes as the Trump administration considers banning Chinese open AI models following the release of Kimi K3 by Moonshot AI, which is the largest open model to date.

The signatories argue that restricting these models would hinder American research and jeopardize the country's technological leadership. This concern is supported by data from the ATOM Report, which shows a significant shift in the AI landscape. Chinese models, particularly the Qwen family from Alibaba, have surpassed American models in cumulative downloads and fine-tuning prevalence.

According to the report, Chinese models now account for over 70% of tokens served on inference platforms. This marks a dramatic increase from fourteen months prior, when their share was less than 3%.
