Indian Markets Slide as Crude Oil Surges Amid Iran Tensions

Indian equity indices and the rupee declined as Brent crude oil prices climbed toward $92 per barrel following US-Iran geopolitical tensions.

Indian equity benchmarks and the national currency faced significant pressure between August 17 and August 19, 2026, driven by escalating geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran. The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty declined steadily as Brent crude oil prices rose from approximately $88 per barrel on Monday to $92 per barrel by Wednesday, a three-week high.

Donald Trump contributed to the market volatility by ruling out an extension of the ceasefire arrangement with Iran. In response, Iran reportedly considered a more offensive posture and declared that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed. These developments, combined with rising US 10-year Treasury yields and a 0.6 percent drop in US retail sales, dampened investor sentiment. By Tuesday, the Sensex had fallen to 77,362 and the Nifty to 24,211.

The Indian rupee also depreciated, closing at 95.61 against the US dollar on August 17. This decline was exacerbated by the Reserve Bank of India's decision to move the deadline for its concessional swap facility for Foreign Currency Non-Resident deposits up to August 31. Despite these headwinds, the Indian market showed some resilience due to strong domestic GDP and earnings growth prospects for FY27, while forex reserves reached USD 707.002 billion for the week ended August 7.
