Israel Probes Foreign Interference After Contested Knesset Elections

Israeli authorities are investigating allegations of foreign funding and bribery in the 2026 elections after Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc failed to secure a parliamentary majority.

The Shin Bet is investigating suspicions that foreign entities, specifically from Qatar and Turkey, transferred funds to illegally increase voter turnout among Israel's Arab population during the October 2026 Knesset elections. Central Elections Committee Chairman Justice Noam Sohlberg ordered the probe on Wednesday, citing serious suspicions of improper influence by actors operating against Israeli interests. The Israel Police's Lahav 433 Unit has since arrested seven suspects and seized cash and ballot slips.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Likud party have characterized the situation as Ra'amgate, alleging that Arab parties stole the election through bribery, forgery, and prohibited software to facilitate a foreign takeover of the Knesset. Preliminary results show no clear winner: Netanyahu's bloc holds 53 seats, the opposition led by Gadi Eisenkot holds 48, and Arab parties hold a record 19 seats, positioning them as potential kingmakers.

While the Israel Police initially rejected claims of widespread fraud, noting a 40% decrease in irregularities compared to previous elections, the Shin Bet clarified that its current probe is based on independently collected intelligence. The Government of Qatar has categorically denied all allegations, describing them as a ridiculous and dangerous disinformation campaign.

President Isaac Herzog called for a full investigation into the interference but cautioned against tarnishing the entire Arab community. Gadi Eisenkot supported the inquiry while warning against using the probe to delay the swearing-in of the 26th Knesset. Meanwhile, Yair Golan accused Netanyahu of using a delegitimization campaign to avoid a crushing democratic defeat.
