Labour Groups Pressure Andy Burnham Over Gaza Policy

Grassroots Labour organizations, including Momentum and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, are preparing to pressure Prime Minister Andy Burnham at next month's Labour conference. The groups are circulating a model motion that demands the UK government recognize Israel's actions in Gaza as genocide, implement a full arms embargo, and impose comprehensive sanctions on trade supporting Israeli military actions or settlement activity.

Andy Burnham has apologized for the party's previous handling of the conflict under Keir Starmer's leadership and admitted the UK was too slow to call for a ceasefire. However, he maintains that determinations regarding genocide must be made by international courts rather than the UK government. This internal friction occurs as over 100 former British and French diplomats call for tougher action.

Foreign Secretary Edward Miliband stated that ministers would establish a comprehensive set of measures following Israeli settlement plans in the West Bank. Meanwhile, party organizers warn that failing to take decisive action could further alienate progressive voters and the broader labour movement.
