Global Sugar Prices Drop as India Production Surges

Raw and white sugar prices fell globally following data showing a massive surge in early-season production in India.

Raw sugar futures in New York fell up to 3.5% to their lowest levels since late September, while white sugar prices also dropped in London. The decline follows data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd. showing that India produced 845,000 tons of sugar as of October 31, which is more than eight times the production recorded during the same period last year.

This surge in early harvest output suggests India will have a reduced short-term reliance on imports as it works to stabilize domestic prices. Market analysts attribute the price slide to profit-taking and a reversal of speculative rallies. Bearish sentiment was further intensified by a sell-off in the Brazilian real following the presidential election victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Despite the current dip, some market participants remain concerned that a super El Niño could eventually curb yields and create a global sugar deficit.
