Trump Releases 2026 National Defense Strategy Prioritizing Homeland

The United States Department of Defense released its 2026 National Defense Strategy (NDS) on January 23, 2026, designating the protection of the U.S. homeland and the Western Hemisphere as the military's highest priorities. The strategy introduces the "Trump Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine," aiming to restore American preeminence in the region and guarantee access to key terrains, including Greenland, the Panama Canal, and the Gulf of America. Russia is characterized as a "persistent but manageable threat." Notably, the document omits references to climate change and Taiwan. The strategy follows recent actions by the Trump administration, including the establishment of Gaza as a U.S. military protectorate and a regime change operation in Venezuela.
